Setting

KETORU is a "Dying Earth" circling a star that's got less than a century left before it destroys all life on the planet. It's an ancient world where the dead far outnumber the living and the living are small in number--settlements strewn across the planet and fewer than 15 major cities.

The human culture on the planet resembles ancient Asian civilizations, but in a post-apocalyptic/medieval state. These are societies that have fallen into a state of barbarism. More on this.

At this time, the dead have begun to re-animate and normally healthy humans that come into contact with--or under the influence of--nine mysterious spheres, have begun to mutate into monstrous creatures.
